Michael F. Zwicklbauer, MD, FACS, is called "Dr. Z" by patients and staff at the Plastic Surgery Center of Hampton Roads. He joined the practice in 1997. Dr. "Z" received his medical degree from Albany Medical College and completed his general surgery residency at the University of Massachusetts where he received the Charles Eckert Award for Exceptional Achievement in Surgery. He was then selected for a hand fellowship specializing in microsurgery at the University of Miami followed by a fellowship in plastic surgery at the Medical College of Virginia. Dr. Zwicklbauer is Board Certified in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He is a member of numerous professional organizations including the American Society of Plastic Surgery and the Medical Society of Virginia. He is also a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, a medical honor society that comprises the top ten percent of medical students. Dr. Zwicklbauer chose plastic surgery because he feels, "it is a most rewarding, gratifying and intimate occupation because I am able to help my patients obtain a goal. For some the goal may be functional, such as helping an arthritic patient regain the use of their hands and for others, the goal may be cosmetic." Dr. "Z" observes, "We are all human and have some degree of vanity. Whether you are 20 or 80, that doesn't change. Most cosmetic patients say to me, 'I am 50, but I feel like I'm still 30.' I try to help bridge that gap." Dr. "Z" grew up in upstate New York and graduated from William & Mary where he played soccer in NCAA Division 1. He and his wife, Marianne, and their two young children, Kristin and Erik, live in Newport News and enjoy many family activities. |
