Breast Reconstruciton
Patients that have undergone mastectomy procedures are able to undergo reconstructive procedures to recreate a natural looking and feeling breast.
Post-mastectomy breast reconstruction is a process that usually requires multiple operations to achieve the desired result. In some cases, the reconstruction process can begin at the same time that the breast is removed.
The first stage of reconstruction involves the creation of a breast mound. Follow-up procedures enhance the appearance of the reconstructed breast by creating a nipple and making other refinements. Your other breast may be lifted or augmented to match the reconstructed side.
Reconstruction has no known connection with breast cancer recurrence, nor does breast reconstruction generally interfere with treatment, should the cancer return. Your doctor is likely to recommend continuation of periodic mammograms for both breasts.
