Plastic Surgeon Alexander McArthur MD

Alexander McArthur, III, MD is one of the senior partners here at the Plastic Surgery Center of Hampton Roads. He joined Dr. Schuler in 1985. Dr. McArthur received his medical degree at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia earning the John Gibbon Award for best surgical student in the medical school. He completed his general surgery residency at the University of Connecticut-Hartford Hospital. He was then selected by Duke University for their prestigious plastic surgery residency program. Dr. McArthur then went to Kleinert Institute in Louisville, Kentucky for a hand surgery fellowship.

Dr. McArthur is Board Certified in both Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and General Surgery and has received the certificate of added qualification in Surgery of the Hand from the American Board of Medical Specialties. He is active in many professional organizations, including his past service as president of the Newport News Medical Society. Specialty memberships include the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, American College of Surgeons and American Medical Association.

When asked about his decision to become a plastic surgeon, Dr. McArthur said, "Plastic Surgery is a positive specialty. Everyday brings new and different challenges and rewards. On the reconstructive side, I like putting patients 'back together' and improving their lives."

Dr. McArthur and his wife, Barbara, a travel agent, have three children. Their oldest son attends the University of Virginia. The family enjoys scuba diving and boating. Dr. McArthur is an avid supporter of his children's many athletic endeavors and can often be found on the sidelines cheering them on.
