Plastic Surgery in Hampton Roads - The Cosmetic Consultation

The Cosmetic Consultation is an important step in the process of considering plastic surgery. All of us at the Plastic Surgery Center of Hampton Roads (PSCHR) are committed to helping you become well informed about the actual process of preparing for and recovering from cosmetic surgery.

Please feel free to ask questions and to let us know how we can help you.

Registration

When you check in at the reception desk, we'll ask you to provide basic information for our administrative records. We'll also ask you to complete a brief health history which gives the physician the information he needs to be sure that you are a good candidate for elective surgery.

Surgeon Conference

The next step is to meet with your potential surgeon, a well-trained and experienced plastic surgeon. You will do this in a consultation room. You and the doctor will spend time talking about your wishes and desires. He will examine you and give you his opinion about how to best achieve your goals. Choosing a surgeon is an intensely personal decision. We believe the formation of a personal bond is an integral part of the surgery and healing process. If you do not "connect" with the surgeon you asked to see, we encourage you to request a consultation with one of the other fine doctors who lead our healthcare team. In any event, we want you to choose the Plastic Surgery Center of Hampton Roads because we'll work together to be sure that you have an optimum surgical result and a wonderful surgical experience.

Imaging

Plastic surgeons can use computer imaging to let you look at the possibilities available, and to aid in the surgical planning process. While imaging is not appropriate for all procedures, it can be very useful to help you understand the options for some procedures. Your doctor will let you know whether imaging is appropriate for the surgery you are considering.

Education

You will be offered the opportunity to go to our video library and look at a film about the procedure(s) you are contemplating. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) prepares these education materials. We also offer brochures prepared by ASPS that you may read and/or take home.

Another way to learn is to talk to cosmetic surgery patients. Many of our staff have had cosmetic surgery and are happy to share their experience and their feelings about their surgical results.

Cost/Timing

The next step is to meet with the Patient Counselor. She can show you before and after photos of actual patients from our practice. She will discuss fees and costs, and can provide information about the various financing plans available. If you have a specific date in mind, she will do her best to accommodate your schedule. If you are still in the information-gathering phase, she will try to be sure all of your questions are answered. The patient counselor is also available for further questions at any time. Her most important role is to help you gather the information you need to make an informed decision about cosmetic plastic surgery.

Anesthesia

Some patients are anxious about undergoing anesthesia. Statistically, patients are at greater risk driving to the office than undergoing anesthesia! But we want you to have complete peace of mind and so we only utilize Board-Certified Anesthesiologists. Prior to surgery you will have an opportunity to meet your anesthesiologist and discuss your specific concerns and wishes with them.

Follow Up

Your consultation also includes an optional second visit if you have further questions for the physician, patient counselor or any member of our staff. Please do not hesitate to ask if this would be helpful.

Certification

Our operating suite, professional staff and internal procedures meet the highest standards of safety. Both the Accreditation Association of Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) and the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities (AAAASF) certify our operating suite. We voluntarily subject ourselves to this rigorous process so that you may be assured that your surgery is performed in a state-of-the art-operating suite that meets or exceeds national healthcare standards.
